ca. 1934. Interior of the Fifteen-Eighteen Cabaret at 1518 Pacific Avenue. The club was owned by Louie DiDent and featured "wine and dine" and "entertainment that is different." Photograph pictures a crowd of people drinking beer at tables and a woman entertainer on stage at the front of room. Waiters in white jackets serve the tables.
ca. 1933. Interior view of the "Happy Days Here Again" Beer Parlour. This is the "Ladies' Service." In this area, women were allowed to enter and sip drinks. One woman and three men sit at the front bar counter. The white shirted and aproned waiters stand beside the rear tables where most of the ladies are seated. This would be a more genteel area of the tavern, where couples could enter together or a pair of ladies could enter without male companions. The tavern was managed by Albert H. Innocenti.

ca. 1930. Jack's Griddle, popular cafe in downtown Tacoma owned by Jack Staley and his son. This is probably the restaurant's original location at 913 Commerce. In 1937, Staley moved his eatery to larger quarters at 912-14 Commerce. Lighted sign advertises hamburgers for ten cents. Below the sign is a AAA (American Automobile Association) sign of approval. Menu posted. Regan's Cabinet Shop sign on upper level. In 1939, the restaurant had been in business for 22 years and employed a staff of 27.

ca. 1938. "Red Pig." Scenes taken under new management in 1938. New manager Bernice Fox is fixing two cups of coffee behind counter. The counter is empty, a stark contrast to the packed area pictured in A7529-1 just a few minutes before. Dick Bevington's new Triple XXX Root Beer Barrel drive-in. Exterior of restaurant at night, giant root beer barrels on top of building, neon signs on cornice, automobiles parked in front. The restaurant was built at a cost of $29,000. Mr. and Mrs. Bevington resided in an apartment on the premises. The restaurant had booths, counter service, car hops and round the clock service.

Six uniformed waitresses pose with a woman in a dark dress at the Husk Cafe, 1211 Pacific Ave., in January of 1943. The women wear little caps, almost like a small nurses cap, pinned in their hair.
The cooks and waitresses of the Husk Cafe at 1211 Pacific Avenue posed at 3:30 pm on January 25, 1943 following the lunch hour rush. They are standing behind the lunch counter with its miniature juke box selectors. Mrs. C. Isabelle Hardwick and Thomas C. Hardwick opened the Husk in 1934. According to a posted sign under the clock, customers could not get counter service unless they were prepared to spend at least 10 cents. For 20 cents, you could get a bowl of hot chili or some pie and ice cream to go with your coffee. The Husk Cafe closed in the late 1950s.

Richard Wagner (center) won this handsome turkey at the Pharaoh Club's 5th annual Thanksgiving dance held on Thursday November 24, 1949 at the Top of the Ocean. Holding Mr. Wagner's turkey, while Miss Janet McMath tickles its breast feathers, is Gene Nelson. The Pharaoh Club was a young men's social group organized by a small number of students in 1939; by 1949 the groups membership had grown. Since Mr. Wagner did not win his turkey until Thanksgiving evening, we must assume that he kept it as a pet - at least until Christmas. (TNT 11/13/1949 p.D-4; 11/27/1949 p.D-1)

Banquet for 25 Year Club and Pensioners at Towers, E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co., Mr. George Collins. DuPont Works Annual Dinner, Pensioners and 25 Year Men. The Grasselli division of E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company began manufacturing lead and calcium arsenates for fruit, cotton and ground crops in May 1944. They also warehoused millions of pounds of agricultural chemicals manufactured by its eastern plant. The company had another plant for the manufacture of high explosives in Dupont, Washington. On Friday the 13th of January, 1950, the worst blizzard in years hit Tacoma. The gale brought five foot snow drifts, twenty degree chills, several hours of 40-60 mph winds and an estimated million dollars worth of storm damage in Tacoma. As pictured, the bulkhead near the "bow" of the Top of the Ocean, the Tacoma Athletic Commission's Ruston Way nightclub shaped like a ship, collapsed. However, the club itself did not suffer extensive damage. Waves 20 feet high broke over Ruston Way during the storm. The freezing temperatures brought in by the storm stayed until the middle of the following week. In the background is the Henry Mill. Ordered by the Tacoma Athletic Commission. TPL-8836

The "noon rush" filled the booths, tables and counter space at Peters' Golden Gate Oyster House, 1122 Pacific Avenue, in February of 1950. The restaurant, in the heart of Tacoma's financial and office building district, was owned and operated by Gus and Mike Peters. The brothers came to Tacoma from the Island of Crete in Greece in 1912 and entered the restaurant and seafood catering business while still teenagers. Gus Peters' original Greek name was believed to be Paneoto Constantine Rodakalikis. They had owned and operated restaurants in Tacoma for 26 years when they opened this new cafe in 1948. The Olympus hotel had just finished a two year remodeling project, initiated by the hotel manager, Virgil West. The new Mirror Room would offer dinner and dancing, and would feature the popular organist, Edith Stern with Ray Edwards. Several exposures of after remodeling of Manning's Market. This angled view of the serving area of Manning's Market's cafe section shows a large container of crushed ice where cold salads and other foods could be displayed and several units for holding hot dishes. Looking through the long horizontal windows, a customer could easily see and then order his selection for the day. The breakfast menu on the wall shows that cereal, fruit or juice, toast and coffee could be purchased for 50 cents and an egg, potatoes, toast and coffee meal would only cost 45 cents. TPL-9506
