On April 7, 1941, the gates to Fort Lewis were thrown open to allow the public to attend the 1941 Army Day and take a look at the Army's demonstration of modern warfare. Here, the 99th Anti-Tank Battalion fires its 37mm anti-tank guns at approaching tanks. Several thousand spectators viewed the one hour mock battle, which included airplanes, tanks, the 99th Anti-Tank Division, armored reconnaissance cars and the 98th Field Artillery unit with their mules. This aerial view of the large Atlas Foundry & Machine Co. plant in Nalley Valley and the area south of Center Street was taken in July of 1941. Atlas' address was listed as 3012 South Wilkeson Street which is the street running vertically on the left. The plant lay between South Tacoma Way (top) and Center St. (at photograph's bottom) The Lincoln Heights housing development would be carved out of the mostly wooded area south of the plant. At the top of the photograph is the area which would become the Tacoma Mall. [Also dated 08-26-1941]

A determined Dorothy Axtelle is photographed on the Tacoma Archery Club's range at Titlow Beach in late July of 1941. She is preparing for the upcoming nationals in Portland and her opportunity to claim the National Junior Champion title. The 15 year old is currently the Northwest Jr. Archery Champion. A star player leaps over the net during the 51st annual Pacific Northwest Tennis Tournament held July 14-19, 1941 at the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club. By October of 1941, the first phase of the 6th Avenue "face lift" was complete. The "jog" in the road at Sixth and Pine had been ironed out, eliminating a traffic bottleneck. The street had been widened and repaved. On the left is Central Bank (2816 6th Ave) and on the left is the Sixth Ave. Market (2809 6th Ave.) and Applings (2815 6th Ave.) The neon sign for the Sixth Ave. Bowling Center (2807 6th Ave.) can be seen in the right foreground. On July 28, 1941, Billie Carter, left, and Dorothy Axtelle practiced on the Tacoma Archery Club's range at Titlow Beach for the upcoming National Championship tournament held in Portland in August. Both women are Tacomans. Billie Carter was national champion in 1939 and 1940. She was helping 15 year old Dorothy, the current Northwest Junior Champion, hone her skills. Dorothy went on to win the National Junior Girls title less then two weeks later. (T. Times 8/2/1941, pg. 8)

On September 3, 1941, the volunteers in the Red Cross Sewing room are busy knitting, crocheting and sewing clothes for the European victims of war. The production room, at 721 Commerce St., is buzzing with activity as thousands of garments are being made by the Pierce County Chapter. By the close of the 1940's, Europe and Asia were at peace, but the R.O.T.C. program continued to function as an important segment of the school's activities. The three Liberty boats, Libby No. 9, No. 10, and No.11, are underway in Commencement Bay heading for Alaska fishing grounds. The seiners were powered by Chrysler Royal marine engines with 3.16 to 1 reduction gears from the National Supply Engine Corporation, Seattle, complete with accessories and keel coolers. Charles (Chuck) Longen received the Outstanding Boy's Club award for 1950. Chuck's award was based on achievements not only in sports, music and the shops, but his personal eagerness to be of help at all times to his Boys' club and others led to his selection, according to Cecil Martin who presented the annual Rhodes award. Two beds with a bedside table between them fit easily in the large bedroom that was part of the new second-story addition to Verne Carlson's residence in 1950. Drawers with an open storage area on top have been fitted into one of the areas left by the sloping roof-line. A window has been placed along the far wall. The top is up on this convertible representing Art's Peach Orchard, of University Place, in the 1950 Daffodil Parade to protect riders from morning rain as cars and floats line up for the big event. The automobile is covered with foil and decorated with daffodils and flowering spring branches for a festive look. The parade was seen by more than 100,000 people in Tacoma and 30,000 in Puyallup and Sumner.

Children of Centennial Flouring Mills employees ride in a daffodil bedecked carriage holding streamers attached to a giant ornamental bag of flour during the 1950 Daffodil Parade. Centennial Mills, located on the water at 705 Dock St., manufactured flour, cereal, poultry and dairy feeds, dried peas and beans, and Frolic dog food. The 1950 parade lined up at South 17th and Jefferson for the 10:00a.m. kick off and moved up Broadway to So. 9th and then back down Pacific Ave. to 17th. Participants were then loaded on buses and trucks for later parades in Puyallup and Sumner. The floats were driven to the later parades under police escort.

The 1950 Daffodil Parade winds its way along the 1300 block of Pacific Ave. with the Associated General Contractors' Sweepstakes winner windmill float in the foreground. The parade consisted of floats, drill teams, color guards, bands and even a dog team of huskies. The parade was seen by over 100,000 people in Tacoma, with sidewalks on Pacific and Broadway ten people deep in places. Every area police officer, county deputy sheriff and state patrolman was needed to handle traffic into and out of the city.
