Firemen gather at the South 11th & Broadway side of Manning's Market on September 21, 1963, to try to put out a massive fire that ultimately gutted the building. (The Bon Marche can be seen in the background.) Flames had engulfed the open area of the coffee shop and firemen were forced to retreat. The loss was estimated at $400,000. This was a 3-11 B-Shift fire which involved 13 engine companies, four truck companies, two rescue units, and three chiefs along with the off-shift. Although there were fifteen injuries reported, apparently none were fatal. The summer of 1963 was a bad one for fires: just a few days before this massive fire, the Tradewell supermarket at 6th & Union was declared a total loss with damages of $400,000 and Pier 7 burned in July in a C Shift fire with over a million dollars in damage. Ben and Marian Cheney smile broadly as they pose with guest Andy Gilbert (left) at the 1963 Washington State Sports Hall of Fame banquet sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission on February 6, 1963. Also at the top of the stairs on the upper right is Tacoma Athletic Commission president William (Bill) Gazecki. Mr. Cheney was a well known sports fan whose generosity allowed thousands of Tacoma youngsters to participate in organized sports. He was instrumental in bringing the Tacoma Giants Pacific Coast League baseball team to Tacoma to play in Cheney Stadium. Mr. Gilbert was the newly named manager of the Tacoma Giants. His pro career spanned twelve years as he performed at every position other than catcher. In his rookie season in the Ohio State League, Mr. Gilbert broke his neck sliding head-first into second base. Undeterred, he returned to baseball the following year. Waving gracefully to the crowd are seven members of the Daffodil court on April 6, 1963. Wet weather on the 30th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil parade did not deter participants or crowds from gamely attending the event. These princesses are garbed in raingear draped over floor length ballroom gowns and carry small white parasols. Their princess float had broken down at the start of the parade, causing a delay of nearly an hour. It was decided that the princesses would walk the route; high heels and slippery streets would not prevent the determined young ladies from greeting parade spectators. They are nearing the end of the Tacoma portion of the parade as they march past the Greyhound station at 13th & Pacific. The strolling royalty were listed as Jane Mutschler, Karen Iverson, Nancy Vaughan, Karen Korsmo, Mary Ann Lambert, Loretta Huffman and Pam Burrell. (TNT 4-6-63, A-1, 4-7-63, B-9)
