An International-style Reserve Officers Military Ball was held on February 18, 1939, at the Crystal Ballroom in the Hotel Winthrop with over 500 people in attendance. Members of the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders from Vancouver, British Columbia, performed a highlander's dance for officers from Washington State. Three boys relax and clown, ready for the 1938 Tacoma Tigers season opening game. In 1937, organized baseball had returned to Tacoma after a 15 year absence. Over 6,000 fans poured into the stands to support their local 1937 Western International League champions, the Tacoma Tigers.

Mrs. Bennett and husband Eric were celebrating their Golden Anniversary on November 29, 1938, with an open house at their home located on South Asotin Street. Kicking up trails of dust as they sped around the Stadium Bowl track, three unidentified girls competed in the First Annual Bicycle Meet and Parade on August 5, 1938. The parade started in downtown Tacoma at South 8th and Commerce and ended at the bowl, were the various races were staged. Ninety six gold, silver and bronze finished medals were awarded to the winners of the competitions along with a wide selection of prizes including sunglasses, shoes, a watch and a new bicycle. Lincoln High School forward, Logan Blades, No. 4, dribbles a basketball down the Lincoln High School gymnasium court as he practices for an upcoming January, 1939, match against the Stadium Tigers. Lincoln would go on to defeat Stadium on the north end school's home court 29-22. Logan Blades came off the bench to score eight points. (T. A trio of lawn bowlers, (l to r) George Fairbaine and Charles P. Middleton of Seattle and Eugene McNeal of Tacoma, crouch to measure the distance between a bowling ball and the "jack" on the green in Wright Park. On May 28, 29 & 30, 1938, eighty five lawn bowlers from Bellingham, Portland, Seattle and Tacoma competed in the Northwest Lawn Bowling Association's holiday tournament in Wright Park . The Scottish game had developed a large following in the Pacific Northwest and Wright Park held one of the finest manicured playing fields in the region. McNeal of Tacoma won the singles title with Fairbairn finishing third. The object of the game is to roll your ball as close to the "jack", the small white ball, as possible. (T. In February of 1939 in honor of National Boy Scout Week, (l-r) David Rees, Troop 21, Frank Taylor, Troop 99, and Jim Myers, Troop 59, were busy learning map making. Over 2,200 Tacoma scouts representing Boys Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered over the weekend to share knowledge and celebrate the Scout event. Boy Scouting was established in America in 1910. President Woodrow Wilson declared the first National Boy Scout Week in 1919, in recognition of the Scout's service during the first World War. (T. Three scouts (l to r) Jim Myers, Troop 59, David Rees, Troop 2 and Frank Taylor, Troop 99, illustrated the correct way to give the Scout Sign during National Boy Scout Week in 1939. The three middle fingers of the right hand are held upward, representing the three parts of the Scout oath, and the thumb and the little finger touch, representing the bond that unites Scouts throughout the world. Over 2,200 Tacoma area Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts from the 110 organized scout units in Tacoma joined together for a full weekend of scout activities in February of 1939. Fleet Week, July 5 through 11, 1938, Tacoma. Sailors help civilians up the gangplank of a battleship for a tour. During Fleet Week, the citizenry was invited to come out and see out their defense dollars were being spent. In 1938, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland dropped anchor in Commencement Bay to visit Tacoma and have Tacoma visit them.

Fleet Week, July 5 through 11, 1938. Sailor playing accordion to a group of four young girls. During Fleet Week, Tacoma played host to 5200 officers and men of the visiting battleships, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland. In return, the Navy thrilled Tacoma with a military parade, boat races and nighttime searchlight displays.
