This group portrait was taken in August of 1925 of the annual National Bank of Tacoma picnic at DeKoven Inn in Lakewood. DeKoven Inn was located on the east side of Lake Steilacoom, about 30 minutes from Tacoma. The photograph is of a large group of people seated at three picnic tables placed among fir trees, with a house, tent, outbuilding, and water tower in background. The Inn itself, which was formerly a boys' school, burned down on August 2, 1925. The dance and banquet hall was saved and became the new center of operation, catering primarily to day parties. Much of the land previously occupied by the Inn was subdivided and sold as lots for summer homes. (WSHS) (TNT 8/13/1925, pg. 23)

ca. 1926. Interior of Hill Shoe Shop, 781 Broadway, in the Winthrop Hotel. The store was owned by Edwin F. Hill. Rattan chairs and tables are available for customers, as well foot stools for salesmen to use for trying shoes on customers. Several baskets of flowers decorate the room, this might indicate a Grand Opening. (WSHS)

Over 300 telephones scheduled to be installed at the new Hotel Winthrop posed around the two person switchboard. A desk telephone will stand on a table in each guest room. The Winthrop is the first hotel in Tacoma to have this type of instrument furnished throughout. The installation will require over 71 miles of lines, running through a 2 ft x 4 ft shaft extending perpendicularly from the basement to the private branch switchboard on the roof garden floor. ca. 1925. In 1925, McKinley Hill had a thriving business community, with locally owned shops and stores lining its sidewalks. Pictured left to right at 3504 McKinley Ave. are Porter's Barber Shop (owned by Ollie B. Porter), Central Shoes (A. Don Soper) and "Gents Furnishings" (Chester & Olsen). 3502B McKinley appears to be vacant and on the right, at 3502 A McKinley, is the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. In 1928, Mr. Porter, the barber, had the Porter Apartments constructed at this location. Although the newspaper doesn't specify this, it appears that the two stories of apartments were built on top of this commercial space. E. Taylor Gardner, of 3618 E "L", was the architect and contractor for the Porter Apartments. (WSHS)

Neon service sign, moved here from Commerce St. side of old downtown location, at far right in photo. Rowland Pontiac-Cadillac was located on South Tacoma Way, the city's "auto row." Irwin-Jones Motor Co.'s Truck Department was the former occupant of this site.

The 45th Annual convention of the Washington Bankers Association was held June 13th and 14th, 1940 at the Hotel Winthrop. A trio of bankers sits holding a conversation on a sofa; Reno Odlin, Puget Sound National Bank, is on the right. The Bankers Association was established in 1889 and boasts a membership of officials from all banks in Washington and representatives of all national affiliates.

Santa Claus on his throne surrounded by a crowd of children and mothers at Peoples Department Store after Santa's arrival from airport on November 24, 1939. Santa would be at the Peoples Store until his Christmas Eve gift run, speaking with the children of Tacoma and checking his naughty and nice list.

An unidentified carhop delivers a tray holding two large mugs of Triple XXX Root Beer to a smiling customer sitting behind the wheel of his car. Dick Bevington opened his Triple XXX Barrel drive-in restaurant at 924 Puyallup Avenue in May of 1940. The restaurant offered booth, counter and car side service with a staff of six waitresses and six carhops.

Frank W. Power, publisher and president of the Tacoma Times Publishing Co., sits at his desk at the new location of the paper, 919 Market St. He is surrounded by flowers from well wishers, congratulating the paper on its move. On the desk in front of Mr. Powers are the front page of the February 25, 1940 Times and one of the special editions from the February 27th paper. The paper on the 27th was 92 pages long, in five sections and weighed over 1 pound.

Winner of Mercury Automobile Contest in front of Titus Motor Company. Man hands envelope to another man across the hood of a 1940 Mercury. Leon Titus at far right. Titus Motor Co. was offering a special prize for gasoline economy. Beginning January 27, 1940, contestants could drive a special Mercury 8 equipped with a gasoline meter. First prize in the contest, 50 gallons of gasoline, would be awarded to the driver with the best mileage. The new Mercury 8 averaged 20 miles per gallon.

Studio photography of a new boot by Bone Dry Shoe Co., shot for advertising purposes. The instep of the boot has a plate with sharp points, probably intended for gripping or assuring sure footing. The Tacoma company was best known for making sturdy, long lasting boots and still employed skilled shoemakers.

Craig Furniture, interior view. Customers viewing furniture in this photograph dated June 13, 1940. This was only one of four floors in the Broadway building that housed Craig Furniture. Comfortable stuffed sofas and wing chairs were available for the discerning eye as well as a variety of lamps located on the first floor and balcony area. Craig Furniture was founded in 1928 by the four Craig brothers who were still working together at the time of this 1940 photograph. (T.Times Ad 7-1-1940, p.9)

Bed department at Kegel's Furniture Company. Kegel's, owned by Otto Kegel, had opened in 1938 in the building formerly occupied by Kaufman-Leonard. Kegel's closed and the building was taken over by Selden's around 1958. Built in 1902, the building was demolished in November of 1975, and a parking garage was built on the lot in 1987.
