ca. 1939. Birds eye view of downtown Tacoma, taken in May of 1939. In the lower left corner is the intersection of 9th and Broadway. The Roxy Theatre, at 901 Broadway (now known as the Pantages), is at the lower left and across Broadway is the distinctive turret of John Hamrick's Music Box Theatre.

ca. 1939. Aerial view from the Narrows of Tacoma's West End with downtown and the Tideflats beyond. Running down the center of the photograph is Sixth Ave. as it veers off to Titlow Beach in the lower right hand. It is crossed by Pearl Street, where the excavation for (what is believed to be) a planned Tacoma airport forms a pattern on the ground. The area is largely undeveloped. Construction on the Narrows Bridge (Galloping Gertie) had begun but was far from completion. For a 1961 aerial view of the same location, see D129800, images 43 & 131. TPL-9156

ca. 1939. College of Puget Sound assistant football coach, Lou Grant. Grant also served as the head coach of the varsity basketball squad. The 1939 CPS football team finished near the bottom of the barrel of their division, but the basketball team finished at the top. (1940 CPS yearbook "The Tamanawas.")

ca. 1939. Group portrait of Fife High School football team, the Trojans. Coach Bill Vinson at far right rear. Player number 10 is Frank Spear, cited by the Tacoma Times as a player of the week. Half of the team is made up of Japanese-American players. Fife was having a very successful year, winning 9 straight games on their way to becoming the Pierce County B League Champions. They continued on to defeat the favored Poulsbo Vikings 7-0 to become the State Champions. Although the Trojan linemen were much outweighed, in one case by over 40 pounds; they were faster and more agile than their opponents. (T. Times 11/16/1939, pg. 19; 11/18/1939, pg. 13)

Approximately half of the team is made up of Japanese Americans. The 1939 Trojans were the State Class B Football Champions. Their expansion would help the company fill the increasing demands for their Heidelberg beer and Columbia ale. View of Columbia Breweries Alt Heidelberg sign: "We are serving Alt Heidelberg. ca. 1939. This elegant, Elizabethan style building at 618-24 Broadway was built in 1919 for the Pacific Car Company from a design by Roland Borhek, who also drew the plans for the Rialto Theater. The Titus Motor Company, dealers for Ford vehicles, took over the building in December of 1938. As Titus Motor Company, and later as Titus - Will Ford, they occupied this building until the mid-1960s when they moved from downtown Tacoma to 3606 South Sprague.
