Daffodil Festival Parade along Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma, view of the Puyallup Lodge No. 32 Ancient Order of United Workmen float being pulled by a Commercial Distributing truck. The annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade was a great success. With more than sixty entries in the Tacoma parade, the judges had a hard time selecting which ones should be sweepstakes winners. An estimated 600,000 daffodils were used on parade floats. Sigma Mu Chi was celebrating their 25th anniversary with a dance in the banquet room of the New Yorker. Fifty couples were expected to attend, Walt Gundstrom and his Orchestra would be playing. The banquet hall was decorated in the fraternity colors, silver and blue, and large replicas of the fraternity pins and pledge pins were displayed throughout the room. Several men enjoy a toast at the wedding of Dorothy Ann Simpson. Miss Simpson's engagement was announced in the Tacoma Times May 10, 1947. She was the daughter of J.P. and Hazel M. Simpson. She and Mr. John J. Wilson Jr., of Boston, Massachusetts, were married at St. Patrick's Church on June 28, 1947. The reception was held at the home of the bride. Alexander S. Melovidoff was the founder and president of the Tacoma Conservatory of Music. For many years he conducted a summer band concert series at Point Defiance Park. This picture shows Mr. Melovidoff and his All-Tacoma Band as they appeared in 1947. Their first concert in the park that year was on June 29th. They played 15 numbers. (T.Times, 6/26/1947, p.13)

Shirley Jean Milstead (Milsted) and William Joseph Sullivan, Jr., were married June 23, 1947, at St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church before 250 guests. The bride and her five attendants are standing at the altar decorated with calla lilies each holding a bouquet. Dorothy Rudolph served as Maid of Honor, Janice Ludwig and Margie Milsted were bridesmaids. Mrs. George Williams and Mrs. Richard Reyran were the candlelighters. A pet parade was sponsored by the Tacoma Lincoln Lions' Club July 26, 1947. The parade started at Lincoln Park and then proceeded through the business district. Awards were presented to contestants by business people of the Lincoln shopping district with free ice cream and balloons for all. Here a wagon, pulled by two matched horses, advertises Carstens Meats and their Lucky Dog Dog Food Contest.The lucky person to submit the best slogan for Lucky Dog would win $200. A delegation of 22 business leaders from Honolulu visited the Pacific Northwest in August of 1947 to help foster trade - and support for statehood for their territory. The Tacoma Chamber of Commerce arranged a full schedule of activities for the visiting business men including a trip to the Carstens Packing Company on the tideflats where they were given a ride in Carstens' horse-drawn meat wagon. Some of the staff stood on the roof of the loading dock to get a look at the festivities. The delegation went on from Tacoma to visit Mount Rainier and Olympia. (T.Times, 8/9/1947, p.1) TPL-9602

Wedding at No. 9th St. and Oxford Church made from an old barn, Times, Paul Lantz. The bride, Myrna McCallister, is wearing a suit and corsage of orchids, and the groom, Paul Case Smith, is wearing his Army uniform. They cut the first piece of their wedding cake. The cake is decorated with a stylish wedding couple figurine. A lace tablecloth and crystal candle sticks decorate the table. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were the first bride and groom married at the new church converted from a barn, the Skyline Boulevard Christian Church. They exchanged vows before 30 guests on August 13, 1947. First State Convention of Amvets. The new state officers of Amvets were chosen at the concluding session of the two-day convention held in Tacoma August 16th and 17th, 1947. This was the first convention for American Veterans of World War II held at the state headquarters at 1131 Commerce Street. They are, L-R, bottom row: Asa Day, Frank E. Dixon, John E. Carstens' display includes windows into a refrigerated area with hung meat and the cuts of meat from each kind of animal, some of the prepackaged foods produced by the company and an array of the processed meats such as bologna and sausages also produced by Carstens. A picture of their new refrigerated trucks hangs along the left wall.

Puyallup Fair, Tacoma Day, Times, Burt McMurtrie. The Puyallup Fair opened September 13, 1947 . Wednesday September 17th was officially declared Tacoma Day. Tacomans tossed business and household cares aside to attend the fair. The Tacoma schools closed to make it possible for the youngsters of the city to attend. Tacoma's Community Chest Parade officially kicked off the 1947 fund raising campaign. Thousands of people gathered on Pacific Avenue to enjoy one of the most colorful parades in Tacoma history. Tacoma businesses, organizations and community members gathered together in the hopes of making it a successful campaign. Pacific Lutheran College was dedicating their new $200,000 science hall in October of 1947. Dr. Conrad Bergendoff, President of Augustana College and Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois, was the guest speaker. More than 1,200 people attended the dedication ceremony. Schorn Paint manufacturers had just been admitted as an associate member of the Tacoma Chapter of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. The Tacoma Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America was formed in 1945 and had their first meeting on June 29, 1945. Pacific Lutheran College dedicated their new $200,000 Science Hall. PLC administrators invited Dr. Conrad Bergendoff, President of Augustana College and Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois as the guest speaker for the event. Pacific Lutheran had grown and enrollment had increased. More than 1,200 students, staff, faculty and guests gathered together to celebrate the new building (Saga, 1948).

Renamed Veterans Day in 1953, November 11 was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. That year, on November 13, John Philip Sousa's band played in the Washington National Guard Armory in Tacoma and President Woodrow Wilson spoke there two months earlier. In 1947, a Military Ball was held on Armistice Day at the Armory, where more than 1,500 people were expected to attend. The presentation of colors to the local reserve units of the Army and Army Air Corps highlighted the evening. Army and Navy dignitaries and prominent civilian guests attended the event.
