Photograph of a Mrs. Mary T.Boyle (listed in the City Directory as Boyles) speaking on the telephone in April of 1937. For National Want Ad Week, the Tacoma Times ran a full page of photographs of satisfied Times Want Ad customers. Mrs. Boyle was the manager of the Sound View Apartments at 10 Stadium Way. Businesswoman Lucille Frantz was one of the Tacoma Times' satisified Want Ad customers in 1937. This photograph of her on the telephone was included in a montage of pictures in a full page ad run by the newspaper as part of the celebration of National Ad Week in April. Prior to opening her Thrifty Beauty Salon at 947 Broadway in March of 1937, Lucille Frantz had been the manager of the Moler Beauty College at 1215 Pacific Avenue. Cigar firmly clutched in his teeth, Clarence Potter ordered his weekly advertising over the telephone in April of 1937. For National Want Ad week, the Tacoma Times ran a full page ad of satisfied want ad customers like Mr. Potter. He was founder and president of the Clarence Potter Co., 1006 S. While attending Army Day at Fort Lewis on April 6, 1938, Emery Alling, Bill Clark, and Bob and Pete Burnell listened to Sergeant Edward B. Green explain how this field artillery piece was used in France, during World War I, to quell a German advance. Green was the only member of the gun crew who survived. Wounded twice, he was decorated with the Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross and Victory medals. (T. Times, 4/6/1938, p. 1).

Judge J. H. Nichols with the bird he selected as the Grand Champion, a Rhode Island Red rooster. The cock is the overall winner at the 44th Annual All-Northwest Winter Poultry Show. On March 10, 1938 the soldiers of Fort Lewis' 125 member 3rd Balloon Company, under the command of Major M. E. McHugo test flew the newest addition to their arsenal. The new blimp was 105 feet lomg and could attain a top speed of 40 miles per hour. It was considered to be a great advance over the blimps used during the First World War. Loading of Norwegian motorship "Nordhval" with scrap streetcar tracks for shipment to Japan. Man pushing tracks over rail into hold of ship. Japan, at war with China, would not say what the 2,500 tons of scrap metal in the shipment would be used for. Over 1/2 of the scrap came from the useless ties in the TR & P Bay street yards. The streetcars had been discontinued in Tacoma in June of 1938. (T.Times, 10/17/1938, p. 5).

In October of 1938 the Norwegian motorship "Nordhval," bound for Japan, was being loaded with old streetcar rails at the Shaffer Terminals, Dock No. 2 on Tacoma's waterfront. Two men operate cranes as another man watches the rails being loaded. Tacoma's last streetcar had been taken out of service in April of 1938 as the old method of travel was replaced with city buses. Street railroad tracks were only a portion of the 2,500 tons of scrap metal assembled from various parts of the Northwest that were being sent to Japan aboard the "Nordhval." In this photograph from October, 1938, Mr. Thomas Jacobsen, of 1007 So. Tyler St., sits next to the wooden replica of the Reims cathedral that he had just finished carving. Working 3 to 4 hours a day, and all day on Sundays, it had taken Mr. Jacobsen three years to create his beautiful 3 foot tall model. He used three kinds of wood - alder, birch, and walnut. Working from a photograph in National Geographic Magazine, his carving included 250 separate statues.(T. Times 10/25/1938, p.1)

On Thursday evening June 30, 1938 a crowd of 5,000 gathered in Tacoma's Stadium Bowl to celebrate the P.W.A. (Progress Works Administration) grant of $2,700,000 to begin construction of a bridge over the Narrows. Dignitaries, included Governor Clarence D. Martin, U.S. Senator Homer T. Bone, Congressman John M. Coffee, and Tacoma Mayor John C. Siegle, spoke to the large gathering of bridge boosters including the Peninsula Bridge Gang. The celebration was not all talk. The evenings festivities included a dance revue which was spread over the entire program, music performed by the 10th Field Artillery band, and a community sing led by Herbert Ford. (T.
