Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. On November 21, 1938, Charles and Marian Bedford celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary with 200 friends and relatives at their home. They lived at 3718 South M Street. They were married November 21, 1888, in Minneapolis and came to Tacoma in 1899. (T. Times, 11/26/1938, p. 9)

50th Anniversary banquet of Troop B Cavalry and Washington Cavalry Association, held in Tacoma June 25th, 1938. The banquet gathered together all the cavalrymen who had ridden under the flag of Troop B, Tacoma's most famous military organization. Troop B was the oldest military group in the state and was often referred to as the "City Troop" by old timers. Its actual designation was Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard. Troop B served as the guard of honor at the inauguration of the first Governor of the state in 1889, as well as in conflicts in Mexico and Berlin. (T. Times 6/23/1938, pg. 8)

Russell H. "Russ" Michael (far right) poses in front of his service station at 3740 So. M. St. with the baseball team that he sponsored. The team had just won the Twilight League Baseball Championship for 1938. Russ Michael opened his station in 1936. He had previously worked at the Michael Brothers Service Station. In the 1950s he started Michael's Oil Service at 1315 So. 38th. Russ Michael died April 14, 1991 at the age of 79.

During Fleet Week, July 5 through 11, 1938, Tacoma played host to 5200 officers and men of the visiting battleships, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland. In return, the Navy thrilled Tacoma with a military parade, boat races and nighttime searchlight displays. Pictured are five Navy battleships anchored in Commencement Bay.

Maxwell, member #2, whose career was in shipping; George L. Palmer, in the printing business and served once as Deputy Sheriff; S.A. Perkins, member #3, newspaper publishing; Major Charles O. Bates, law; and Calvin S. Heilig, member #1, theater owner in Tacoma and Portland. "Sam" Perkins served as master of ceremonies at the meeting where many memories were shared and enjoyed. (T. McChord Field under construction in February of 1939. The metal framework of a curved barrel vault roofed building is highlighted against the sky. On completion, this structure will be a hangar housing warplanes. The War Department was constructing a modern airbase on acreage that formerly held Tacoma Field, the city's municipal airport. The land was deeded to the War Department in March of 1938. Construction contracts totalled $2,649, 455.00 and employed 2100 men. Ordered for Corky Maybin, T. Times. (T. ca. 1938. Neff & Co. Flooring Store, interior view of rolls of linoleum flooring. The company was owned and operated by Arthur L. Neff, a local amateur boxing supporter. They sold retail furnishings, including a complete line of carpets, rugs, linoleum, washing machines and homes products. They also sold the Johns-Manville line of asbestos siding & roofing. ca. 1938. The Rigney twins, Lucia Rose Rigney O'Donnell and Marcella Catherine Rigney Henly, pose with grandchildren at a family reunion in Steilacoom. The sisters were born to John and Elizabeth Rigney in 1862, two of 9 children and the second set of twins. Rose married Judge William O'Donnell. They had no children. Marcella married Neil Henly. They had seven children. After the twins were widowed, they lived together at the Rigney home in Steilacoom and kept statistics for Western States Hospital until 1950. Marcella died in August of 1950 and Rose died March of 1951 after the pair celebrated their 89th birthday.

Photograph of the McDonald-Smith building, 1932-36 Pacific Ave., taken in February of 1939. The building was constructed around 1890 (1932-34 Pacific) with an addition at 1936 Pacific added in 1893. In 1939, the addresses were occupied by, left to right, Paramount Supply Co. (at 1936), the former location of Consolidated Dairy Products Inc. (1934) and Younglove Grocery Co. Truck with extension. Peterman Manufacturing Company. Parked beside building with shed roofs with clerestory windows. The door and veneer manufacturing company was owned by Theodore A. Peterman. This is the first "Peterbuilt" truck ever built by the Peterman Manufacturing Co. It was headed toward Al Peterman's Morton logging operations. The truck carried a spare set of traction tires. Mr. Peterman had first experimented on an older fleet of White trucks before building this prototype in 1938. He then bought the Fageol truck plant in Oakland, which had gone out of business during the Depression years, and started manufacturing Peterbuilt trucks there.
