ca. 1937. Works Progress Administration motion picture projectionist at the Tacoma Armory, circa 1937. Man looking at reel of film, sign reading "USA Work Program WPA", many children in background. The poster is a typical graphic from the WPA. The WPA was created in May of 1935. The letters originally stood for Works Progress Administration, which later became the Works Projects Administration. The New Deal program provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression. It was shut down in later 1943, as defense industries eliminated unemployment during World War II. (T. ca. 1937. Stadium High School Girls' Marching Unit, the Tigerannas, ca. 1937. The Tigerannas were formed in 1937 to march with the Stadium Band, providing a little extra color to performances. They were the brainchild of R.C. Fussell, Stadium Instrumental director. The 45 girls were photographed standing in wing formation. Their uniforms are short, shiny dresses in blue and gold with matching Cossack boots and pillbox style hats. (T.Times 10/15/1937, pg. 8) (WSHS)

ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma real estate and investment broker tried for mail fraud in 1937. Four men crossing the street at 9th Street and Court A on their way to the Federal Courts. Mr. Morrison would end up serving three years of a five-year term at McNeil Island federal penitentiary. In October, 1941, he would be summoned to Superior Court on eleven counts of grand larceny in the alleged misappropriation of $30,000 entrusted to his firm by Frank Berry, fisherman. ca. 1937. Sentencing of Stanley G. Morrison, Tacoma broker tried for mail fraud, 1937. Three men standing in the doorway to the Federal Building. Mr. Morrison would be sentenced to a five-year term for using the mails to defraud. He would be released on parole from McNeil Island federal penitentiary after serving three years. He then would be tried in Superior Court on 11 counts of fraud in 1941. (T.Times 10-14-41, p. 1)

ca. 1937. Russell (Russ) H. Michael's Service Station baseball team; the 1937 Twilight League Baseball Champions. The players wear long sleeved shirts that say "Russ Michael's Service, 38th & M." The man in the bow tie is Russ Michael, the owner of the service station. In the 1930's, baseball was the true American sport and most Americans played. City leagues were numerous and many businesses sponsored a team. (Michael's identification supplied by a family member)

ca. 1937. Wrecked automobile off roadway in South Tacoma, circa 1937. Automobile is a 4-door sedan with round rear window and spoke wheels. Impact seems to have occurred on the driver's side as both the driver's door and rear door were heavily damaged. The accident has drawn a crowd of curious spectators, including children.

ca. 1937. In 1937 former Tacoma mayor Melvin G. Tennent (far left) was photographed while visiting the Globe Machine Manufacturing Company at 301 East 11th Street. Melvin Green Tennent was twice elected mayor of Tacoma; first when he defeated four-term incumbent Angelo Fawcett in March, 1926, by 4000+ votes, and again in 1930. Born in 1885 in Marietta, Georgia, Mr. Tennent went to work in an iron foundry when only 10 years old. He moved to Washington state in 1920 and became the president of Tennent Steel Casting Co. with branches in three cities. In 1937 the City Directory listed him as the vice-president of the Atlas Foundry. Mr. Tennent, who claimed to have tried to retire three times, died in 1969 at the age of 84, still active in real estate. ALBUM 11.

ca. 1937. A frame shelters gathered in a large circle at Roy's model hop farm. Pictures ordered by Tacoma National Bank. The 41 acre hop farm was owned by James E. & J. W. Feak. The shelters are possibly intended to house migrant workers that pick the hops. Farm also pictured in series D5210. In 1936-37, the County was involved in improving and deepening Lacamas Creek. The work was not sufficient and the creek flooded the Feak's hop lands. In 1938, the Feaks sued the County for over $30,000 in damages.

ca. 1937. Independent Bible Church, circa 1937. The pastor of the church was the Rev. Roy T. Brumbaugh. This new church was created when Rev. Brumbaugh split from the First Presbyterian Church. Four hundred and sixty-five members signed up with Dr. Brumbaugh to join the Independent Church. He typified his members as "fundamentalists" who opposed the organization of the Presbyterian Church. The Bible Church met at the Scottish Rite Temple, 5 So. G St., which it purchased in 1937. In 1943, the church dropped the Independent and became the Tacoma Bible Church. (filed with Argentum)
