Red Cross activities, Mrs. Strong. By February of 1944 there were over four million Red Cross volunteers throughout the United States. Although many worked as typists, clerks, and ambulance drivers, there were also volunteers that supported the war with needle and thread. These Tacoma women, seated at tables fitted with sewing machines, standing at an ironing board and seated with hand sewing, are sewing garments for hospitals and refugees. Two other women are seen through a doorway working with ledgers. Lifesaving and water safety were among the many skills taught at the special Benbow Lake Red Cross Training Center at Kapowsin in July of 1947. 112 high school students from 45 Red Cross chapters in Canada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Washington were sent for the special 12 day training session, including Nancy Hobbs from Tacoma and Harry Butts from Sumner. The international convention came to Tacoma for one day of their four-day convention from Seattle on August 15, 1947. The Gyro Club delegates arrived in Tacoma by boat, toured Point Defiance Five Mile Drive, enjoyed a water carnival staged at Point Defiance pavilion and had salmon dinner before returning to Seattle.
