Tacoma Art League was presenting the work of Colonel C. Ross Greening at the Washington State Historical Building. Colonel Greening painted his graphic paintings while in a German Prison Camp. Colonel Greening was the inventor of the "10 Cent Bomb Site", this technique was used by Colonel James Doolittle in his Tokyo raid. View of Colonel C. The Tacoma Girl Scouts held a Fashion Revue at the Temple Theater on March 20, 1948. The proceeds would benefit the St. Alban's Girl Scout Camp. The Girl Scouts showed traditional and new scouting clothes as well as sports outfits and fashion clothes furnished by Rhodes Brothers Department Store. Background music was provided by Arnold Levenenze at the organ. Four young girls and boys wearing their Sunday best and two teenage girls wearing two-piece bathing suits wait in the sidelines, with four women organizers, for their turn on the runway. The goal of the Stocking Fillers project of the Tacoma Elks Club in 1948 was to insure that every child in Tacoma would be remembered on Christmas day. To help reach their goal, the Elks worked closely with Tacoma's 1,900 Girl Scouts. The scouts made sure that each of the 120 dolls that were given as gifts came with a full wardrobe of handmade clothes. Several men entertained thousands during the semi-annual benefit for the Tacoma Orthopedic and Day Nursery organizations with an 1952 election year spoof. The stage was decorated as a giant television set. Hollis Day, alias "Stevenson" is on the soapbox, while Din Fuhrmeister, alias "Eisenhower" (far left) awaits his turn. Both sang rousing campaign songs. Mayor John H. Anderson is at far right in photo as a reporter with fellow "Meet the Press" cohorts Len Higgins, Virg Langdon, Norm Runions and Webster Judd. Ten women model evening dresses and suits in a style show that was a fund raiser for the Orthopedic Guild and the Tacoma Day Nursery. An immense crowd, nearly 4,000 people, turned out to find out that the rumors of a super-colossal, musical style parade with impersonations of presidential candidates were true. A Great Dane extends a paw to hotel personnel as she accompanies Police Chief Jack Elich during the 1953 March of Dimes campaign. Diane Katherine O'Donnell, a pedigreed Great Dane, has a March of Dimes coin bank strapped to her side for donations. The coin banks are in the shape of miniature iron lungs. Diane is the official mascot of the Tacoma Police Department. The March of Dimes was an annual fundraiser by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to provide the means for polio research and treatment. The sixth annual rhododendron flower show sponsored by the Tacoma Chapter, American Rhododendron Society was expected to attract more than 6000 individuals during its two day run in the Bank of California lobby in May, 1954. There were more than one hundred varieties of rhododendrons on display, many in tall planters, along with azaleas and a waterfall in a natural woodland setting. The colors of the flowers ranged from scarlet to deep white, soft yellows and gentle pinks. Rhododendrons ranged in size from twelve feet high to mere inches off the ground. Local growers were proud to exhibit their prize specimens although it was decided this year that the show would be noncompetitive in nature. 9TNT 5-12-54, B-1, TNT 5-16-54, A-2)

A large gathering of the Pierce County Practical Nurses Association met at the Woman's Club House on May 14, 1953. The Woman's Club House was located at 426 Broadway and was the former residence of Isaac Anderson; it had previously been occupied by the University Club. The practical nurses listened to a speech by Dr. Scott Jones. The superintendents of nurses for several hospitals, including Northern Pacific, Washington Minor, Pierce County, and Mountain View Sanatorium, and the president of the State Association of Practical Nurses were among the dignitaries present. The Pierce County Practical Nurses Association met at the Woman's Club House on May 14, 1953, and enjoyed a delicious banquet. Spring flowers and lighted blue tapers decorated the tables. Dr. Scott Jones was the principal speaker that evening. Honored guests included the superintendents of nurses for several local hospitals and the president of the State Association of Practical Nurses. The four Tacoma chapters of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution held a tea honoring local high school girls who were contestants in the Good Citizenship Pilgrimage. These high school students were chosen by their teachers for their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. They would compete with others over the state in an examination paper which was judged by a board appointed by the state DAR regent. On March 13, 1952, Ted Hill (far left), representing the Citizen's Armed Forces Committee, accepted an armful of magazines and paperback books from George W. Cairns, chairman of the Moose's Lodge Boy Scout Committee. The scout master for Moose troop 435 and over twenty of the troop's members, most in uniform, watched from behind the third stack of magazines donated by the troop to the U.S. forces stationed in Korea. The servicemen were short of reading material, particularly men's magazines, comic books and paperbacks. Each fire station in Tacoma was accepting donations. (TNT, 3/23/1952, p.A-4)

ca. 1952. Three drum and bugle corps from area American Legion Posts pose in humorous costumes for this picture taken on the 700 block of Broadway in downtown Tacoma. Represented are the Auburn Post No.78, Seattle's University Post No. 11 and West Seattle's Post #160. The American Legion held its 1952 state convention in Tacoma in August. The convention was highlighted by two downtown parades. The Voyageurs of La Societie des Forty Hommes et Eight Chevaux (40 et 8) staged their "Goof" parade from So. 7th and Pacific Ave, to Jefferson, to Broadway and back to the Elks Temple. More than 22 units participated. The costumes range from cross dressing, to dressing like children, to a couple of men dressed like babies in diapers and bibs. The American Legion is a patriotic society formed of veterans dedicated to preserving the rights of those who have served in the military and volunteering time and raising money for charities. (T. Three people pose with a lion, "Simba", in a publicity shot for the National Infantile Paralysis. The Lions Club planned a benefit show, "Thanks a Million", which would be presented at the Temple Theater. Simba, the lion, was to be one of the star performers in the show, which had a circus theme. The Ellen Satterlee Orthopedic Guild sold large styled 1952 appointment calendars to benefit the soon-to-be constructed Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The Guild, part of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association, would be staffing booths at Fisher's and Rhodes' department stores in November, 1951. Pausing in front of the Titus Motor Co., 618-24 Broadway on July 12, 1939, was a Cooney Transfer & Storage Co. flatbed truck with a bevy of young women aboard. They were taking part in the Rainbow Girls Parade and represented Yakima Assembly. The truck carried a basin labeled "Fountain of Youth" that was carefully tendered by the girls.

Pioneer Association meeting at Steilacoom Town Hall; Federal Revival style building by Emanuel J. Bresemann, Architect, built in 1930. On October 11, 1939, the Pierce County Pioneer and Historical Society held their fall meeting in Steilacoom at the Town Hall. The members dressed in their ancestor's period clothing for the event. Between 1850-1858, Steilacoom was home to the first territorial court and the first Protestant Church north of the Columbia river. In May of 1940, Ruth Babbit was photographed swinging into the spring golfing season at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Every Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Club, and over 50 female members took the opportunity to practice their follow through on the links. Ruth Kennedy Babbit was the wife of Alexander Babbit, then assistant manager of the Bank of California National Association. Mrs. Babbit also excelled in figure skating, later becoming an international skating judge, and was a well known water color artist. She passed away on August 31, 1992, at the age of 89. (T. Part of the membership of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers poses on the College of Puget Sound campus. Their photograph will be exhibited in the planetarium at the New York World's Fair. The group organized in 1931and has built 30 telescopes of varying size and power. The membership has spread and now boasts members as far away as Yakima, Seattle, LaGrande and Wollochet Bay.
