Harold D. Hayward, in the center of the front row, holds the autographed bottle of 1917 Hennessey Five Star cognac that will go to the survivor of the Last Man Club. The members of the Club were World War I veterans and past Commanders of the American Legion, Edward B. Rhodes Post No.2, since its organization in 1919. The second annual meeting, pictured, was held Dec. 4th, 1939 and following meetings scheduled for the first Monday of December each successive year. The flag draped chairs represent deceased members of the Last Man Club. Dr. John C. Siegle, Mayor of Tacoma, was the first to pass on after the club was formed in December of 1938 and the other flag was for Dr. E. A. Rich, who died before the club's inception. Chester Chastek (not pictured) became the sole survivor on Feb. 16, 1992 after the death of Tacoma resident Paul O. Brown. He was 92. He later died Feb. 23, 1997 at the age of 97. The milk he's delivering is Jersey Milk, from the Grand Pre farm owned by Paul Hebb. Diamond T trucks were commercial trucks and were manufactured by the Diamond T Truck Co., 3811 South Tacoma Way. In January of 1940, nine men were photographed while looking over the dormitory in the new Tacoma Rescue Mission at 1510-12 Pacific Avenue. The Tacoma Rescue Mission provided clean beds in a wholesome, Christian surrounding to transient and homeless men, most referred by the Pierce County hospital, the welfare office or the Police Department. The Mission's "new" building had previously been a tavern and small two story hotel. The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel was built on the site where the Rescue Mission used to stand. (T. These 60+ Eagle Scouts and adult leaders met at the First United Presbyterian Church (now Trinity Presbyterian Church) on January 30, 1940 to take the first step in organizing the former 15,000 Boy Scouts of America who had called the Tacoma area home into an alumni group. It had been decided that the Eagle Scouts, the highest ranking in scouting, would be the first group formed in the new alumni organization. Among those attending were four sets of brothers who were all Eagle Scouts: Mike & Pat Brendel, Bill & Charles Rohrs, Dick & Frank Clinton and Harold & Don Foster. The Tacoma Area Council of Boy Scouts were formed about 1918 although a few troops had been organized in earlier years. (T.Times 1-31-1940, p.3- article & photo of the four sets of brothers)

Formally attired young folk at a dinner-dance held at the Tacoma Club on March 9, 1940. This was the first of Tacoma Club's formal dinner dances during the 1940 season. The Old South of "Dixie Land" was the ball's theme. Backdrops would include river steamers and cotton fields. The black servant dolls shown above would be used to hold table reservation cards. In May of 1940, Ruth Babbit was photographed swinging into the spring golfing season at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Every Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Club, and over 50 female members took the opportunity to practice their follow through on the links. Ruth Kennedy Babbit was the wife of Alexander Babbit, then assistant manager of the Bank of California National Association. Mrs. Babbit also excelled in figure skating, later becoming an international skating judge, and was a well known water color artist. She passed away on August 31, 1992, at the age of 89. (T. Y.M.B.C. Narrows Bridge Committee. Club members may have looked deep into their closets to find the variety of hats worn in this June 25, 1940, photograph. Ten-gallon, sombreros, top hats and skipper's caps are worn jauntily by the Young Men's Business Club. Each year they held a Water Carnival at Point Defiance; in 1940, the date of the carnival was set for Sunday, June 30th, the day before the grand opening of the first Narrows Bridge and several days before the opening of the nation's newest airbase, McChord Flying Field. The Y.M.B.C. was a service organization who was heavily involved in community affairs; they would also sponsor the last ferry ride on the Kalakala, July 2nd, which would carry nearly 1400 people over the two routes to be discontinued by the opening of the Narrows Bridge. Cups and plaques on display are to be awarded to the winners in the various events. Washington State Pharmaceutical Association State Convention - Tacoma - July 14-17, 1940. Large group of men seated on roof top. Some 400 druggists were expected to attend the Tacoma convention held at the Winthrop Hotel including P.H. Brady, chairman of the Washington State Board of Pharmacy. Election of new officers chosen for the upcoming year saw a Tacoman, Everett Riser, selected as president of the association.
