Four Japanese-American Boy Scouts, (l to r) Nobukazu Oyanagi, August Nakagawa, Jimmy Miyazaki, and Tetsuo Tamaki, performed as the color guard at a special party held on October 29, 1941 honoring the "Nisei" soldiers in the United States Army stationed at Fort Lewis. This group of Boy Scouts was planning to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree, scheduled for August 21-31,1935, in Washington, D.C. The names of the boys are, left to right, Charles Anderson, Warren Nordquist, Bob Brotherton, Charles McAfee, Al Pousard, Bob Stetson, Bill Mill, Bob Peterson and William Dane. The jamboree was planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of scouting. Before boarding the train however, the boys received word that the jamboree had been cancelled due to a threatened epidemic of infantile paralysis (polio) in the nation's capital. Instead the boys travelled to Vancouver, Lake Louise, Winnipeg, Chicago, Niagra Falls, Albany, West Point, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC and the naval academy at Annapolis. This portrait of Mrs. Betty Grosse was made in December of 1935. She posed in a long formal white dress next to a buffet holding crystal. From 1933 through 1939 the Tacoma Little Theater productions were presented on the stage of the Slavonian Hall at 2306 No. 30th St. In 1940 they moved to their current home at 210-12 No. I St.

Julia C. Williams Orthopedic Guild square dance committee. The trio were planning the annual square dance called "Roundup Daze" to be held June 30,1956 at the Tacoma Armory. Proceeds from the $.75 admission would go to the Mary Bridge Childrens' Hospital. The poster entreats "We invite you to dance- and help some child to walk." Y.M.B.C. Narrows Bridge Committee. Club members may have looked deep into their closets to find the variety of hats worn in this June 25, 1940, photograph. Ten-gallon, sombreros, top hats and skipper's caps are worn jauntily by the Young Men's Business Club. Each year they held a Water Carnival at Point Defiance; in 1940, the date of the carnival was set for Sunday, June 30th, the day before the grand opening of the first Narrows Bridge and several days before the opening of the nation's newest airbase, McChord Flying Field. The Y.M.B.C. was a service organization who was heavily involved in community affairs; they would also sponsor the last ferry ride on the Kalakala, July 2nd, which would carry nearly 1400 people over the two routes to be discontinued by the opening of the Narrows Bridge. Young Men's Business Club, Narrows Bridge Committee. Group of men wearing celebration hats gathered around table in office decorated with a multitude of signs on June 25, 1940. They are probably finalizing plans for both the club's annual Water Carnival, held at Point Defiance, and their participation in opening day festivities of the first Narrows Bridge. Cups and plaques on display are to be awarded to the winners in the various events. Mount Rainier Council's seventh annual Scout Jamboree, held in the College of Puget Sound's Fieldhouse May 4-5, 1956, included more than 100 colorful booths staffed by Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. One particular exhibit featured Scouts posing in uniform with a sombrero-clad donkey in front of a wall decorated with Boys Life magazines. Boys Life is a periodical published by the Boy Scouts. The Jamboree also had demonstrations of scouting skills presented by various Pierce County troops. Over 5,000 area scouts were in attendance. Ticket sale proceeds aided 138 Boy Scout and Explorer troops to purchase camping equipment, 88 Cub Scout troops to purchase equipment and training materials and the development of Camp Hahobas on Kitsap Peninsula, an overnight scout camp. Scout Jamboree, ordered by Ed Richards. A pack leader poses with his group. They are garbed in Native American regalia, probably to appear in a demonstration. These boys appear to be older and are probably Boy Scouts not Cub Scouts. Scouts involved in the annual Scout Exposition at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse May 4-5, 1956 were between the ages of 10 and 16. Various troops from Pierce County would be performing demonstrations. Lincoln, Lakes and Southeast demonstrations would be on Friday and Northwest, Peninsula and Valley Mountain would perform on Saturday. Demonstrations would include knot-tying, first aid, canoe building, marksmanship and leather craft. (TNT 5/2/1956, pg. A-4)

In May of 1940, Ruth Babbit was photographed swinging into the spring golfing season at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Every Tuesday was Ladies' Day at the Club, and over 50 female members took the opportunity to practice their follow through on the links. Ruth Kennedy Babbit was the wife of Alexander Babbit, then assistant manager of the Bank of California National Association. Mrs. Babbit also excelled in figure skating, later becoming an international skating judge, and was a well known water color artist. She passed away on August 31, 1992, at the age of 89. (T. Publicity photograph for the Neva Lyness Orthopedic Guild's "Fanfare" Dance. Co-chairmen Mrs. Robert Lynch and Diane (Mrs. Chris) Turlis put the finishing touches on flowering branches that will be used, along with lanterns and fans, as decorations for the dance to be held August 1st at the Towers. Colorful fans and champagne would be given as party favors. All proceeds from the dance will go to the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.
