Nearly 1,000 dogs and their masters participated in the Commerce Street Dog (Mutt) Parade on Saturday morning April 22, 1939. Sponsored by the Commerce Street Business Men's Club, over seventy prizes were distributed to the winners in various catagories. No youngster went without some award, as each participant received a free ice cream bar, a baseball cap and a balloon - and every dog received a special treat. (T. Times, 4/24/1939, p. 1)

The Commerce Street Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. A young girl with her puppy, tagged number 73, receives a Tacoma policeman's admiration. Another girl holds her sleeping puppy and does not seem to approve of the attention. Any child 16 and under could parade with their dog and over 1,000 turned out to compete for over 75 special prizes. (T. Times, 4/24/1939, p. 1)

Over 1,000 kids turned out to parade, viewed by many times that number parents and well wishers. This truck covered in red, white and blue bunting and awnings was entered by one of the many "Townsend Clubs" in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. The sign on the top promotes "The Townsend Plan for National Prosperity." A sign on the side reads "The Townsend Plan is the only Recovery Plan." Other signs promote "Townsend Plan gives our youth a chance" and "Work for Youth." Directly behind the cab of the truck ride several young women and under the awning ride several of the seniors that supported the Plan. The Plan was formulated in 1934 by Dr. Francis E. Townsend and called for a $200 a month pension for each retired person over the age of 60. The money had to be spent within that 30 days, insuring circulation of funds. It would be financed by a 2% federal sales tax. The Plan had a strong following among seniors, many who had their savings and retirement funds wiped out by the Depression. Although never adopted, the movement had a strong political base.

The "Famous Reichmuth Family" plays Swiss tunes for the crowd from the back of a flatbed truck during the Golden Jubilee Parade, July 22, 1939. Their regular location to perform was the Swiss Village at 1318 Broadway, where they played old-time Swiss and Scandinavian tunes for the dancers' enjoyment. The parade entry was also sponsored by Whitworth Fuel Co., 2513 No. Proctor, and Oil Sales & Service Co., 764 Commerce St. A lone child stands in the street beside the truck. The crowd can be seen in the background, 5-6 layers deep.

Golden Jubilee parade on July 22, 1939. View down Pacific Avenue, opposite the old Sears Roebuck building, looking north. Parade of approaching army trucks and artillery. Between 4,500-4,600 sailors, soldiers and marines participated in the Golden Jubilee parade. There were more than 60 floats, 20 of them entered by Washington counties, and numerous horses, antique automobiles, horse-drawn fire apparatus, bands and drum and bugle corps. Spectators, estimated at more than 100,000, lined the entire parade route. The parade was 14 miles long and took three hours to pass. It formed at 17th & Broadway, marched north on Broadway to Division, down Division to Stadium Way to Pacific and south on Pacific to 24th.

The sailors were part of the more than 4,500 military personnel who took part in the parade. There were also six battleships in dock at the time of the parade. This horse drawn buggy emphasizes the frivolity of the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. Instead of being pulled by a horse, the buggy is hitched up to two people in a mule costume. The driver calmly observes the crowd shading himself with his parasol, leg dangling over the side of the conveyance. He is accompanied by two boys, one of whom is looking over the back at the following drill team. The flag bearer for the drill team marches beside the buggy.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Float sponsor Centennial was also celebrating their golden anniversary, growing from one small mill in Spokane in July of 1889 to an employer of 700 in four major mills in Tacoma, Wenatchee, Ritzville and Spokane. "Farm girls" ride the float next to golden shocks of wheat. In the back, a barefoot boy with his overalls rolled up leans against a small house. Centennial was located on Schuster Parkway, next to Sperry Mills. It was destroyed by fire in January of 1947.

This horse drawn wagon draped at the sides with evergreen boughs was entered in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Defiance Lumber Co. The men on the platform are involved in some pioneer wood cutting techniques. In the center, one man hacks at the log with an axe, while another man sits atop cutting with a saw. A motorcycle with a side car rides along the side of the wagon. Defiance Lumber was located at 4601 Ruston Way . Lee L. Doud was president.

Fisher's Flouring Mills, maker of Fisher Blend Flour, contributed this delectable layered float featuring a three layer anniversary cake, complete with candles, for Washington State's fifty years of "progress," 1889-1939. Fisher Flouring Mills wishes Washington a special happy anniversary with this layered convection of a float, dotted with girls in white dresses. One girl is perched atop the cake while another is enthroned in the rear under a canopy. The float is colored white and decorated to look like frosting. Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. All of the counties of Washington were expected to send floats representing their area in the parade, twenty of them did. This float is from Whitman County, located in southeast Washington. It is essentially a farming county, raising wheat, dry peas and livestock on its 2,167 square miles. The float emphasizes the county's importance in the wheat supply. In 1939, it was the leading wheat producing area of the USA. The county was named for Dr. Marcus Whitman, pioneer medical missionary. The vehicle, float #49, is surrounded by sheaves of wheat and topped with bags of barley, oats and wheat.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. This decorated truck is the parade entry from Adams County. This county in southeastern Washington was established by the Territorial Legislature on November 28, 1883, from a portion of Whitman County. Wheat, cattle, and sheep are the major products of the county's 1,895 square miles. It was named for John Adams, first vice president of the United States and the second president. The truck pulls a wagon bearing a model of a farm. A girl in a white or pastel spring dress is perched on the hood, holding a parasol.

Close-up of "Miners of '89" float entered in the 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade that celebrated the state's 50th anniversary. The float, a replica of Mount Tacoma (Rainier), was sponsored by the Negro Citizens of Tacoma. At least one "miner," with ax, is riding at the rear of the float. Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. The "Swiss Colony" entered this float in the parade. Its floral decorations include replicas of the United States and the Swiss flag on the front. A model of the Alps takes up most of the float. Two accordion players and several people in native costumes populate the float. It is accompanied by four girls in Swiss outfits walking beside the float. The crowd along the parade route, several people deep, can be seen in the background. The front row sits in chairs, while those in back stand or perch on the buildings for a better view.

Our neighbor to the north, King County, entered this float in the parade promoting the county as America's Playground. Pictured at the front of the float are two women pilots, followed by a beauty queen, boaters, tennis players, a singer and a marksman in dark clothes.
