Stadium High School (Tacoma)--1930-1940;

Stadium High School's tennis team posed on campus on April 14, 1938. The school had won numerous city championships in the sport and 1938 was expected to be no exception. From L-R were: Darrell "Righty" Eden, Don "Lefty" Eden, Bill Taylor, Bill Guyles and Richard Meyer. The Tacoma Times noted that because of the boys' "all-around strength" tennis observers believed that the Stadium team should be ranked best in state. All except Richard Meyer were seniors and graduated in June of 1938. By age 18, "Righty" Eden was ranked 10th nationally in the Boys Scholastic Division at the same time (tennis great) Jack Kramer was ranked #1. "Righty" would attend the University of Washington along with his twin brother and would letter in all four years. The Eden brothers would continue playing tennis after college and never lost in doubles in their age division from the 35s through the 55s. Narrows Bridge celebration at the Stadium Bowl. A Capacity crowd is pictured in stadium and behind the fence on the west side for celebration of $2,700,000 P.W.A. (Progress Works Administration) grant for Narrows Bridge construction. The fete was attended by over 5,000. (T. Times 7/1/1938, p. 1).

Stadium High School 1939 Basketball Team. The team, under the direction of Coach V.G. Lowman, was on top of the Tacoma prep standings. Considered short for a basketball team, they made up for their lack of altitude with sheer attitude. The fighting Tigers, in at least six of their games, came from far behind to win. Team members are, front row left to right, Art DeMaris, Matt Kapovich, Bob Loftness, Wes Hudson, Marion Klarich and Russ Soper. In March of 1940, Stadium High School presented their 28th annual opera "Desert Song." The 200 students in the cast rehearsed three months to perform the light opera March 28-30. The lead was played by Donna Mae Jaden, who later achieved fame as musical and film star Janis Paige. Women representing several auxiliaries of Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations posed on the steps of Stadium High School on April 24, 1940. Among the nine women was Mrs. Leon Cecil of Puyallup, senior vice-president of the Department of Washington auxiliaries, Veterans of Foreign Wars. She is second to the right, first row. Mrs. Cecil was at Stadium to award two students, Perry Burkhart and Dave Glenn, who had captured first and second place essay honors among Tacoma students and would be eligible for honors in the statewide essay contest sponsored by the auxiliaries of the V.F.W. The 1941 Stadium High School basketball team, under the watchful eye of Coach V. G. Lowman in the dark shirt, starts out the season with a little hoop practice. For several years, Coach Lowman had produced a champion prep team and 1941 promised to be no different.

The Stadium High School wrestling team, the 1941 City prep champions, avidly watched on March 17, 1941 as Bill Bodenhammer (top) and Don Ferris engage each other in a demonstration lock. Other team members are, front row, Gene Pape (coach), Arnie Hansen, Chuck Issacs, Lee Merz, Dennis Livingston, Kiromi Kikuchi, John Collins, Phil Rogers. Stadium took the city title, and the giant Cammarano Brothers trophy that went with it by winning five of their eight scheduled matches. On Memorial Day in 1941 a ceremony was held at Stadium High School to pay tribune to the eleven Stadium High alumni who lost their lives in World War I. Twelve wreaths were lain, one each at the base of the eleven trees that lined the parking strip in front of the school, and one at the memorial plaque that lists the names of the soldiers. Joseph E. Ford, County Auditor, had a voting machine placed at Stadium High School so students could become familiar with the voting process. Students were offered the chance to vote on the candidates for the upcoming election. Student ballot results were announced prior to Tuesday's national election and their major candidate choices included : Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democrat, for President and Mon C. Queen Phyllis Hale of the 1946 Tacoma Postwar Jubilee draws a winner from a large barrel and then hands the slip to Mayor Val Fawcett. According to the News Tribune, Easeador W. Giedd was the luckiest of the estimated 25,000 spectators at the combination fireworks and musical show. During the summer of 1946, while Tacoma's school age children were on vacation, a group of police candidates were taking classes at Stadium High School. At the end of August, 37 of the candidates received diplomas and were declared full-fledged members of the Tacoma Police Department. Attending the graduation were a number of veterans of the Tacoma and Seattle police departments including: Police Captain A.E. Farrar, third from the left in the front row; Police Chief P.G. Gregg, in a dark suit and white hat; Safety Commissioner R.S. Temme, in light colored suit and "skimmer"; and Seattle Police Captain Emile Vallet, next to Temme. Stadium and Lincoln High School students joined together at Stadium High School to clean up vandalism that occurred after the Lincoln-Stadium basketball game in March 1947. After Lincoln beat Stadium, 38 to 31, "Lincoln" was found spray painted over buildings, windows and sidewalks. Lincoln students formed a scrub brush and mop brigade with Stadium and helped clean up the mess. (T. Times, 3/5/47, p. 1). TPL-10465

A true "Easter Parade" of fashions was on display at the afternoon tea and fashion show sponsored by the Girls Club of Stadium High School and the P.T.A. in March of 1947.
