Scope and content
ca. 1937. Model of the ship "Preussen," built by Nepean (N.C.) Garrison. The "Preussen" was a five-masted steel-hulled ship built in 1902 and named after the German state and kingdom of Prussia. It was the only fully rigged vessel with five masts ever built until the 2000 launch of the similar Royal Clipper, a sail cruise liner. The "Preussen" was rammed by a British steamer, the "Brighton," in November of 1910 as the "Brighton" tried to cross before the "Preussen's" bows. Heavily damaged with her steering equipment inoperable, the "Preussen" ran aground during a November gale. Her hull was not salvageable. (Additional information provided by a reader).
