Scope and content
Scenic views of Eastern Washington with focus on the Grand Coulee Dam. When this photograph was taken in the fall of 1950, the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River had only been officially operating for eight years. The massive project had begun in 1933 and the first water cascaded from the top of the dam in 1942. The Grand Coulee remains the largest concrete structure in the United States and third largest hydroelectric facility in the world. It still is the major provider of electrical power to the Northwest, provides irrigation to 500,000 acres of the Columbia basin, and is instrumental in providing flood control to the river basin. It is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. (users.owt.com/chubbard/gcdam/html/history.html)
