Scope and content
In February of 1953, a team of flight mechanics was photographed servicing an airplane in Hanger #2 at McChord Field. The plane is believed to be a Douglas C-47B-15-DK Skytrain which was used for military transport. Its tail number is 349517. The plane in the back is a Troop Carrier with 1086 on its tail. The Air Force had recently redone the lighting in the hangar to provide better and more efficient visibility. Lighting fixtures were attached to the metal framework of the roof and sides. Construction on McChord Field began in 1938 on the site previously occupied by Tacoma's airport, Tacoma Field. It was formally dedicated on July 3, 1940. Plane number 349517 was later converted to an AC-47D "Spooky" gunship and was used in Vietnam. Photograph ordered by Westinghouse Electric Co.
