On November 30, 1938, with the contracts awarded and construction assured, the "Narrows Bridge Gang" held their final meeting at the Winthrop Hotel. The group representing all parts of the city had formed in January of 1936 and held weekly luncheon meetings. Their purpose was to urge the construction of a bridge across the Narrows.
