Scope and content
Overall exterior retaining wall at Glacier Sand & Gravel Co.'s Steilacoom plant, ordered by Butler Construction and Engineering. Butler received a $542, 000 contract for the construction of these unique walls. Steel had to be bent to follow the sharp curvature of these two 40 foot high reinforced concrete walls. The two walls, one 190 ft long and the other 400 ft long, were located near railroad and dock facilities for ease in shipping. Sand and gravel were dumped into the bunkers by a system of conveyors and hauled out by a belt conveyor running inside 8 ft. reclaiming tunnels constructed underneath the retaining walls. The conveyor carried the sand to transfer stations for loading railroad cars or to the dock for loading on barges. (TNT 10/25/1953, pg. C-13)
