Scope and content
Informal portrait of George J. Osgood. In 1922, the year of this photograph, Mr. Osgood was the vice-president/general manager of Wheeler-Osgood Co., a prominent door manufacturer located on a 14-acre tract in the Tacoma Tideflats. The firm had been co-founded by Mr. Osgood's father, Iowa native George R. Osgood, in 1889, to produce Douglas fir and cedar doors, sash, blinds, interior finish and millwork. George J. Osgood, an accountant, was one of the firm's first employees. He had left the company in 1907 to help establish the McCleary Timber Company until asked to return by President Thomas Ripley. Mr. Osgood once again became part of Wheeler-Osgood in 1919 and rebuilt and modernized the plant. A concentration on door production and elimination of millwork and local custom business meant that an average of 10,000 doors a day could pour out of the plant. Several other Osgood family members would continue to work for the company including George J.'s son, George H. Osgood. The Wheeler-Osgood Company's Tacoma plant, showing its age, would have its assets liquidated in 1952. G2.1-094 (www.apawood.org/plywoodpioneers)
