While many of Tacoma's early settlers were from the Midwest and East Coast, Southerners were also drawn to the area. Dr. Clarence P. Gammon's father, William Gammon, was a partner of Daniel Boone in Kentucky. Mrs. Clarence P. (Mary) Gammon's father, John Winder, served on the staff of General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.
