Copy of customer photograph. Ordered by Drew Foss on June 12, 1964, for insertion into an album. Undated sepia portrait of an older Henry Foss, head of Foss Launch & Tug (later Foss Maritime). His parents, Norwegian immigrants Thea & Andrew Foss, started their maritime business with the purchase of one rowboat. The one purchase would soon lead to buying more rowboats and eventually renting them out from their home on the City Waterway. Henry and his brothers would ensure that the business continued to grow after their parents' deaths with expansion to Alaska and to California. Capt. Henry Foss, U.S.N., would see service during WWII and retire as a rear admiral in the Naval Reserve. He would become a state senator and Tacoma Port District Commissioner. In 1973, the Tacoma School District named its newest high school after Henry Foss; it was the first time that a senior high school would honor a native Tacoman in such fashion. When he died in 1986, his memorial service was held at the high school. (History of Pierce County, Vol. 1, p. 185; Olsen: For the Record, p. 179)
