Copy of customer print ordered by Jessie Dyslin Boys Ranch on September 29, 1967. Undated headshot of actor Darren McGavin, television, film and stage star. Darren McGavin came "home" on October 6, 1967. He had lived at Tacoma's Jessie Dyslin Boys' Ranch for three years between the ages of 13 and 16. In appreciation for all the Boys Ranch had done for him, he brought a large selection of clothing and personal belongings from his Hollywood pals to be auctioned off at the grand opening of the South Tacoma's Value Village Thrift Store. The store was sponsored by the Boys' Ranch and all proceeds from the auction would benefit it. Friends Henry Fonda, Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Red Skelton, and Bob Hope were just a few of those contributing items for the auction. Best known for his portrayal of Seattle reporter Carl Kolchak in "The Night Stalker," Mr. McGavin also appeared simultaneously in 1959's "Mike Hammer" and "Riverboat" television series. Movie audiences saw the versatile actor in the dramas "The Man with the Golden Arm" and "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell" and as Ralphie's "Old Man" in the comedy "A Christmas Story," running perpetually every Christmas season on television. His first appearance in the movies, however, was a homemade movie made at the Boys' Ranch in the late 1930's. In it a freckled face, red haired young boy played football and fell off a cow onto his bottom. Mr. McGavin would comment that he had been doing that ever since then in Westerns. Darren McGavin was married to actress Kathie Browne until her death in 2003. (TNT "Suburban Beat" 10-4-67, D-4; TNT full page ad 10-5-67, C-3; D-23)
