Scope and content

ca. 1938. Mayor John C. Siegle, portrait ca. 1938. Copy ordered by the Tacoma Elks on 2-13-69. A dentist by profession, Dr. Siegle won election on March 8, 1938, to become the first native Tacoman mayor. He had previously made a bid in 1934 for the office but was defeated by George A. Smitley. Vigorous campaigning in the 1938 election took a toll on his health and it was an ill man who took office on June 6, 1938. Ira Davisson, Public Utilities Commissioner, was acting mayor for several weeks before Dr. Siegle's death on April 12, 1939. Dr. Siegle had been a civic leader well before his election as mayor. He was the Past Exalted Ruler of the Tacoma Elks, past president of the Kiwanis Club, founder of the Izaak Walton League Chapter in Tacoma, and past commander of the Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 of the American Legion. ALBUM 11, ALBUM 16. TPL-8436
