Scope and content

Copy of customer negative. Portrait of Rev. Mark A. Matthews, 11th minister of the First Presbyterian Church, Seattle. Rev. Matthews, originally from Jackson, Tennessee, was installed in 1902 and remained for 38 years. During his tenure, the First Presbyterian Church grew from a congregation of 1,000 in 1903 to 8,000 in 1940; it was then the largest Presbyterian church worldwide. Much of the growth was due to Rev. Matthews' fame as an orator and evangelist. Photograph ordered by the Oakwood Co. (www.firstpres.org/History)
