Scope and content
ca. 1946. General Dwight D. Eisenhower with fellow officer in an undated, possibly late 1940's, sepia photograph. Lt. Col. James Stack was the senior aide to General Eisenhower. General Eisenhower, the Army chief of staff, was in town on February 19, 1946, conducting a flying inspection tour of army installations. General Eisenhower was not a stranger to Fort Lewis. He, then a Lt. Col., was the chief of staff of the 3rd Div. He sanctioned the then Sgt. Stack's courting of Lt. Carol Koski, army nurse. Mrs. Eisenhower was the godmother to the first Stack daughter, Linda. "Ike" would be the godfather of the second Stack daughter, Carol. Col. Stack maintained a home in Gig Harbor and was active in civic duties. He would retire in the late 1940's. Copies were ordered on May 19, 1946, by Col. Stack. (TNT 2-20-46) TPL-4752
