Party for George Manning's 102th birthday at the Armory, given by the Custer Relief Corps. Mr. Manning is the area's oldest veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic. Mayor Harry Cain (right) assists with the cake. In the foreground of the picture, left to right, are Mrs. Millie Ball, 90, of the CRC; Mr. Manning; Ruston O. Reed, Department Commander of the GAR of Washington and Alaska; Mrs. Mary A. Fuller, 91, of Tacoma and Mayor Cain, the youngest man at the party. Behind Mr. Manning is his nurse Mrs. C. H. Hamilton and at her left is Mrs. B.E. Hayes, president of the CRC and chairman of the celebration. Mr. Manning was born July 20,1838 in Illinois and was a childhood friend of Abraham Lincoln's oldest son Robert Todd Lincoln. He served with the state militia during the Civil War and was a proud member of the Custer Relief Corps. His long and varied careers saw him acquainted with Wild Bill Hickock, prospecting for gold in Montana and farming on Vashon Island with his wife. (T. Times 7/22/1940, pg. 14; 7/20/40, pg. 1)
