Scope and content
Looking a bit like the mad hatter with numbers extending up from their hats, the winners of the 1940 Fireman's Salmon Derby at Point Defiance posed on July 18, 1940 with their catch. Entrants were from Tacoma, Seattle and other cities. The largest was caught by Al Guy of Tacoma, weighing in at 15 lbs. 3 oz; the smallest by Fred Wendland of New Jersey, 11 oz. Mr. Guy won an outboard motor while Mr. Wendland received a silver pitcher. The fish were donated to the children of the Industrial Home and after the contest, the firemen enjoyed a communal dinner. Pictured kneeling, left to right, Robin Otis, Glenn Otis, Al Guy, Howard Sayres, Paul Braaten and C. Durkee. Back row, left to right, Ray Hammond, Frank Conklin, Art Kelchner, Walt Birkland, Art Strong, Art Youk, Ed Thompson, Oran Miller, P.T. Smith, Peter Van Veen, George Anderson and Erling Bergerson. The names supplied by the Tacoma Times do not equal the number of men in the photograph. (T. Times 7/19/1940, pg. 13) (Additional identification provided by a reader)
