Scope and content

U.S. Marshall Artis J. (A.J.) Chitty, his wife Gladys and daughter Bonnie Jean. Photograph taken two weeks before his sudden death on August 22, 1940. Marshall Chitty was killed in a scuffle with two bank bandits who attempted to gain their freedom from a holding cell. Joseph Paul Cretzer and Arnold Thomas Kyle were on trial for attempting to escape from McNeil Island Penitentiary. During the lunch recess, they were held in a detention cage in Marshall Chitty's office. As Chitty went to unlock the door to take them into the courtroom, the two men lunged, striking him on the right side of his head. He died 15 minutes later. Marshall Chitty was 53 years old and, prior to his appointment as Marshall in 1934, he had published the local newspaper, the Shelton Independent. (T Times 8/23/1940, pg. 1) TPL-9070
