Scope and content
This is Bob Drost, Tacoma Police Department Motorcycle Traffic Officer, on a police bike during the September 23, 1940, visit of Republican Presidential candidate Wendell Willkie. Mr. Willkie was stopping in Tacoma for roughly an hour on September 23, 1940. In that short time he planned to stop at the Northern Pacific South Tacoma shops, Lincoln High School, Wheeler-Osgood plant, and his own local campaign headquarters downtown. Robert J. Drost retired in May of 1964 after a 25-year career with the Tacoma Police Department. He had worked his way up from a rookie cop in 1939 to captain of detectives in 1959. (T. Times 9-24-40, p. 1-article on Willkie visit; NWR clipping file )
