Scope and content
Peggy Mason, Tacoma girl and "Miss Washington," arrives at Union Station on October 23, 1940 after representing Washington state in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She is greeted by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Mason, on her return. Enroute to Tacoma, she had stopped to visit relatives and friends in Chicago and San Jose, California. Although a favorite of the judges, she did not place in the final contestants at the contest. According to Miss Mason, a girl needed a "whole world of talent" to have a chance at Miss America. Miss Mason, who also held the title of Miss Tacoma, was Tacoma's first official contestant in the national contest. (T. Times 10/24/1940, pg. 12)
