Scope and content
On November 7, 1940, Tacoma Marine Corps Reservists marched from the Municipal Dock to Union Station where they boarded a train to their active duty station in San Diego. They are pictured on the road behind Union Station with the (now) Murray Morgan Bridge in the far background. The 120 Tacomans, under the command of Lts. Stanley Larson and James Cashion, were called up for the "duration of the emergency." America, although not formally at war, had reinstated the draft and was calling up its reservists to enter active duty. The active mobilization was for all members of the Eleventh Battalion of the Marine Corps Reserves, which included Companies B & C of Tacoma and A & D of Seattle. The train was a special 14-car Northern Pacific transport, and was scheduled to leave Tacoma at 10:30 a.m. on the 7th. The train left for San Diego with around 250 men and 11 officers on board. (T.
