Scope and content
In the rear, in overcoats, are Reverend Paul Ackermann, left, and Professor Edwin A. Sanders after they get off the train in Steilacoom on December 30, 1940. They are being met by T.J. Brock, superintendent of the prison camp at Fort Lewis, where they will be interred after refusing to register for the draft on the grounds of conscientious objections. Rev. Ackermann, former high school football star and minister of Woodlawn Methodist Church in Portland, felt the discipline of the church allowed him to differ with the demands of his country when they challenged his primary loyalty to God. He was married and the father of four. Mr. Sanders, instructor of English and journalism at Pacific College in Newberg, Oregon was a Quaker. They will serve one year terms at Fort Lewis, aiding in military construction. (T. Times 12/31/2940, pg. 1)
