Scope and content
D.H. (Dave) White, left, civil engineer who surveyed both Camp Lewis and Fort Lewis, directs W.P. Bonney, of the State Historical Society, over a part of the military reservation that was once the White homestead. The spot where they are standing was once the garden of the White family. Mr. White was the original surveyor when Pierce County gave 70,000 acres to the US government in 1916 to establish Camp Lewis, used for the mobilization of troops in World War I. His extensive knowledge of the area was used again when Camp Lewis was dismantled and Fort Lewis constructed. He also did the surveying for the Fort's most recent expansion. (T. Times 2/26/1941, pg. 40)
