Scope and content

This very original hat evoking summer with its smoking barbecue over a fire pit, worn by Mrs. Charles Allen, won the prize home-made design for 1957's Bonnet Promenade presented by the Ida S. Baillie Orthopedic Guild. The imaginative hat even had a piece of driftwood and starfish along with sea shells and small rocks. To accentuate the sea theme, Mrs. Allen's hair and neck were covered by a net-like material. Hats modeled at the event by 90 orthopedic guilds were auctioned off, and purchased by guild members' husbands, with proceeds benefiting the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. This photograph documenting the prize-winning hat ran in the February 22, 1958, Saturday Evening Post. Coincidentally, the Post's cover of a Constanti Alajalov drawing featuring an unusual hat came out the same day as the 1957 Bonnet Promenade; guild member Mrs. Harold Baird wrote and received from the artist the original painting to be used in fundraising for the children's hospital.
