Scope and content
Fred Myers, assistant meteorologist, and Harold Fickenscher, assistant observer, measure and report the local weather. In this photograph, one of the men is measuring the wind velocity on an anemometer at the weather bureau's tower on the roof of the Fidelity Building. A master thermometer is inside the small structure just above the tower ladder. This equipment, as well as, rain gauges, a sunshine recorder, and a mercurial barometer help make the daily, 24-hour records of weather conditions in Tacoma. The station opened at this location on April Fools Day, April 1, 1938. (T. Times, 3/31/1938, p. 1; 9/12/1944; 2/26/1941 p.45 photo)
