Scope and content
Physical therapist Iola Thompson lifts a small patient into the therapy pool at Tacoma General Hospital with the help of a new hoist. The hoist was purchased by the Orthopedic Guild. The lift enables one nurse to handle a patient, a process that formerly required several nurses, and prevents the stretching of already weakened muscles. The pool is especially beneficial in post treatment of polio patients. Treatment is given in the warmth and buoyancy of the water to retrain weakened muscles. TG has given 850 treatments to children and adults who suffered some degree of paralysis from the recent poliomyelitis epidemic. Each treatment takes 3/4 - 1 1/2 hours. (T. Times 2/25/1941, pg. 11; 2/26/41, pg. 41)
