Although this photograph of a bearded young man looks of recent vintage, it was actually taken almost 70 years ago in 1941. Francis MacPherson, 25, reported for military duty in Tacoma when his number was called up on the selective service list. Mr. MacPherson worked for a logging company in Eastern Washington and had not cut his hair in many years nor shaved since August of 1938. He loved the outdoors life style and lived in a tent. Due to a minor physical disability he was not inducted into the military and was able to return to the Blue Mountains near Dayton.
