Scope and content

June 26, 1941 was a red-letter day for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company. 85 distributors would be put to work delivering the largest issue of the Tacoma phone directory ever published. It had more of everything- more numbers (33,000), more pages and more copies (49,000.) The book, held in this picture by Margaret Bell, was sealed with a band printed with the admonition not to open until the 29th. On Sunday June 29th, Tacoma's phone system would become completely dial operated and everyone would need the book to track number changes. Over 4,000 phone numbers would be changed as Tacoma's last exchange became dial operated. (T. Times 6/26/1941, pg. 7; TNT 6/26/41, pg. 6)
