Scope and content
Corp. David Lake (left), Company D 163rd Infantry Harlowtown, Mt., and PFC Harry D. Treffry, Regular Headquarter Co. 161st Infantry, stand at parade rest on either side of a weathered monument honoring the pioneers who celebrated the first 4th of July west of the Mississippi River in 1841. The celebration was directed by Capt. Charles Wilkes, head of the expedition commissioned by the President to explore the Northwest, and the Rev. Dr. John Richmond, in charge of the Jason Lee Methodist mission at Nisqually. In honor of the hundred year anniversary of that celebration, this picture ran on the front page of the July 4th, 1941 Tacoma Times. The monument was not part of the official 100 year celebration however, since it was located in a restricted area of Fort Lewis. The monument was erected in 1906, 65 years after the event. (T. Times 7/4/1941, pg. 1)
