Scope and content
In July of 1941, Corp. David Lake and PFC Harry Treffry solemnly read the inscription on a weathered monument honoring the pioneers who celebrated the first 4th of July west of the Mississippi one hundred years ago. The celebration was directed by Capt. Charles Wilkes, appointed by the president to explore the Northwest, and Rev. Dr. John Richmond, from the Jason Lee Methodist Mission at Nisqually. The monument was erected in 1906, 65 years after the event. The area where the monument lay was mostly neglected, it was in a restricted part of Fort Lewis. (T. Times 7/4/1941, pg. 1)
