Scope and content
In August of 1941, with Washington's National Guard committed to the war buildup, Governor Langlie and others feared that the state would not have the resources to fight a heavy wildfire season. "Keep Washington Green" and "Forest Defense is National Defense" became statewide catch phrases. Ralph Birum, left, of Consolidated Freightways supported the view that prevention of forest fires was the responsibility of every citizen. He points out one of his company's colorful truck posters to Corydon Wagner, of St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co. (T.Times 8/19/1941, pg. 2)
