Scope and content
On January 25, 1942, petite Mary Thomas, a seventeen year old senior at Stadium High School, was crowned Queen of the 11th annual Tacoma Winter Sports Carnival at Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park, by John C. Preston, park superintendent. On the left is attendant Juanita Daniel of Lincoln High School and on the right is attendant Margaret Johnson from the College of Puget Sound. This trio of royalty was unique in that each of the girls could ski, a rarity among winter sports queen contestants. (TNT 1/26/1942, pg. 1-alternate photograph; T.
