Scope and content
Pi Beta Phi alumnae gathered at the home of Mrs. Allen Petrich on November 1, 1960, to publicize the Settlement School Craft Sale to be held on November 10th. Mrs. H.K. Nichols, Mrs. Hilton Gardner, Mrs. Allen Petrich and Mrs. Arthur Abel are pictured above. Handmade brooms and clothing from the Pi Beta Phi Arrow Craft Shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, are on display in the above photograph. Each year Pi Beta Phi chapters nationwide would hold a special Settlement School tea and sell Appalachian-made items in support of the school formed to aid an isolated mountain community. The local chapter of the alumnae club is named after Inez Smith Soule, a Tacoman who, in 1867, was one of the twelve founders of Pi Beta Phi. The settlement school in Gatlinburg is a living memorial to the twelve founders. (TNT 11-6-60, D-5)
