Scope and content
In the wee hours of a Sunday morning in June of 1942, several soldiers are pictured still abed in the dormitory set up in the gymnasium of the First Congregational Church. Fort Lewis was swollen with soldiers preparing to leave for the battlefields of World War II and on weekend leave they came to Tacoma. There were not enough rooms in Tacoma for all of the soldiers, so area churches stepped up and provided beds over Saturday night and a hearty Sunday morning breakfast for a mere 55 cents.
