Scope and content
Portrait of Mrs. Frances W. Grafton taken in August of 1942. This photograph appeared in an advertisement announcing that Mrs. Grafton, an interior designer, had been added to the staff at W.P. Fuller & Co., wallpaper and paint retailers, as a consultant. Mrs. Grafton would be assisting clients in planning color schemes for their home redecorating. Mrs. Grafton, in addition to being a career woman, was the wife of Arthur E. Grafton Jr., vice president of A.E. Grafton & Co., who dealt in real estate, mortgage loans and insurance. The couple lived at 409 N. Tacoma Ave. Mrs. Grafton was a native of Duluth Minnesota and received her degree at the University of Minnesota. On becoming a wife, she began to sympathize with young matrons decorating their homes and did graduate studies in interior design at the College of Puget Sound and applied design studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. She also created designs for furniture that was produced commercially in Tacoma. (T. Times 8/19/1942, pg. 13; TNT 8/16/1942, pg. A-8 article & picture)
