Scope and content

Publicity for Community Chest. Goodwill Industries provided work and training for individuals in the Tacoma area and were recipients of the Community Chest funding. Broken and damaged furniture were repaired on site to be sold at low prices. Here Arthur Turnow (also spelled Tornow in the Times article), 39, reconditioned an old child-sized chair with fresh paint. Stricken with infantile paralysis when young, he had little use of his right arm and had an unsteady gait. Formerly a streetside pencil peddler, he had worked for Goodwill for the past year, fulfilling Goodwill's slogan, "Not Charity but a Chance." (T.Times 8-18-42 )
