Scope and content
During automobile mechanics class, instructor C.E. Cruver, right, explains a vehicle battery to (L to R) Mrs. Thomas (Otis) Henderson, Mrs. E.E. (Helen) Meader, Mrs D.M. (Marie) Wood and Mrs. Clinton S. (Jessie) Reynolds. In August of 1942, several socially prominent Tacoma women were getting greasy and learning about car motors to help support the war effort. As members of the Red Cross Motor Corps, they were enrolled in a motor mechanics class at Fort Lewis, sponsored by the Army Ordnance Base. (T. Times 8/22/1942 p.5)
